Strathclyde Uni Gets Set for International Sailing Competition
A team of sailors from Strathclyde University Sailing Club landed in Portugal today to prepare for the 1st Qualifier event of the 2023 Sailing Champions League which is to be held at the Vilamoura Sailing Centre next weekend.
Skipper Jake Miller and his team of Calum Bell, Tony Fitzgerald, Laura Young and Rowan Edwards, claimed their place to represent British clubs in the International event by finishing in 2nd place in the final of the British Keelboat League last September.
The team used the February BKL event in Port Edgar to prepare themselves to compete against twelve of the best keelboat teams from across Europe and on familiarising themselves with the venue Jake said ‘We are extremely grateful for the support of Savills, Royal Western Yacht Club(Scotland), University of Strathclyde – Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering, Strathclyde Sports Union & the Royal Yachting Association all of which helped to make the trip possible.’
All twelve of the teams that Strathclyde Uni SC will compete against finished highly in their own National Keelboat Leagues so it will be stiff competition, and with twelve different nations competing in Vilamoura it will provide a great opportunity for our team to experience international competition.
The Vilamoura event will be raced in a fleet of J70 Keelboats and as many windward / leeward 15 minute umpired races will be fitted into the 4 day racing schedule. Those teams finishing highly in this event will qualify for entry into the Sailing Champions League final which is to be sailed in Travemunde, Germany in July later this year.
We wish our team well, and we’ll be watching their results with interest as they are published live throughout the event. Select the image below to view the live results stream.
